Policy and Public Affairs
Nick currently works as Policy and Public Affairs Manager for a primary care membership organisation. His focus is on effective engagement with Senedd members and decision-makers in Welsh Government and the Welsh NHS.
This core role has also opened up other opportunities and Nick is currently Chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges Wales Policy and Public Affairs Group
History
Nick has a long-standing interest in history. He studied the subject for his degree at what was then the University of Glamorgan (now University of South Wales). His dissertation was focused on the political salience of the issue of slavery during the American Civil War. These days, Nick's interest is often in the understanding the depth and variety of history in a specific place, whether that be his hometown or a holiday destination. Nick served as a trustee and Chair of Newport Civic Society 2013-2017. His interest has broadened to include historical art and architecture.
International Relations
In his thirties, Nick returned to higher education at Cardiff University to study an MSc Econ in international relations. His dissertation involved a discourse analysis focused on independence movements. His studies also included comparative political economy, human rights, and geopolitical theory. International relations continues to be a topic which Nick takes an interest in. He is an observer to the Senedd International Relations Cross-Party Group.
Running
While rarely lacking enthusiasm, sporting talent did not come naturally to Nick. However, during 2020 he started 'Couch to 5k' and, basically, kept running. Now a member of Lliswerry Runners, Nick has competed in over 60 races including a marathon, Welsh Cross-Country Championships and his home village Hill Race (during which he wished he grew up somewhere flatter!). Nick keeps a note of his races primarily for his own records, but it can be viewed online, many of the races he has taken part in also appear on the Power of 10 website.
